Panzawhatzi?

Ciconte’s Italia Pizza: The apparent birth place of the South Jersey famed “Panzarotti” is Marlton’s own Pizza Den, now called Ciconte’s Pizza. For those of you that are not familiar with a Panzarotti, it’s a clever little number consisting of pizza dough made into a pillow filled with a mixture of sauce and cheese, then deep fried for a nice crispy outside. It’s done in a similar style to a calzone, but stands on its own level. I was told that if I was going to get a Panzarotti, that this is a great place to get it from. So one day, while in the area with time to kill, I took the challenge. The Panzarotti came out piping hot and I had to wait a good five minutes before I could take a bite. I had to cut little holes to help vent out the heat. When it was finally time to dig in I was a little disappointed with my meal. I expected each bite to be filled with cheese and sauce, but the first half of the meal was me just taking bite after bite of overcooked dough. When I finally got down to the sauce I was very pleased with the taste and the fact that it was a more sauce then cheese mixture. But, overall, the overcooked pillow of dough and the lack of filling in the beginning had me disappointed. From what I’ve been told by friends, I happened to “get a bad one.” I’ll give them another go around one day and next time, I’ll add some pepperoni to the mix.
