Mexicali Rose: This restaurant is an old favorite of mine. It has been in Montclair for quite some time. It was closed for a time, pending new ownership, but was reopened this year. I decided to see how it was. The décor is very cozy with lots of Mexican and Californian paraphernalia peppering the walls. There are a few tables for outdoor seating, as well as a large dining area by a large glass wall decorated with various cacti and other plants indigenous to deserts. This place is a BYOB and, was rumored, to be a local haunt for high school kids to come and get drunk of wine they brought from home. Their margaritas are fantastic, even if they are virgin, though you can always spruce them up with your own supply of tequila. The chips and salsa were good; they are brought fresh to your table. I was sad to see their Chicken Mole was no longer offered (a chicken dish made with chocolate It’s surprisingly delicious). I tried their chicken enchilada platter and it was superb. There was plenty of flavor, the red sauce was superb. It was served with rice and black beans. All in all, this is a great little Mexican restaurant. Perfect for family, friends, or a date.
