A rose by another name would be what ever it is by the new name
Mexicali Rose: I did this place before for our Mexican restaurant week a while back. I’ve decided to do it again because of the changes made to the place. Being that the original restaurant was closed for a few years and reopened in 2008, the first year has shown that the new managers have gotten the restaurant back into the it’s former groove. The menu’s are very colorful yet confusing. The re-vamped restaurant offers far more items then they ever did before. Yet the menu seems very condensed. They offer three entre specials and one appetizer special. They still don’t have a liquor license, so it’s still a BYOB which is great.
I had the carne asada steak which was phenomonal. It came with sauteed cactus, which is a first for me. Cactus tastes sort of pickeled, but doesn’t have too much taste. The steak however, was superb. It came sizzling off the skillet, which is my favorite thing to see at a mexican restaurant. The sides were rice and beans. The black beans were a little watery for my liking, but lets not get crazy here.
Mexicali Rose remains one of the best places to start your night in Monctlair. You bring a bottle of tequila, get some margaritas, and you’re set to go.
